Winter 2484.
New Year's Eve, December.
Allsworth Estate in Tystead.
The Allsworth Estate was surrounded by a quaint garden, which Annorae's mother and grandmother had tended to for as far back as Annorae could remember. When her mother had passed away, the duty of tending the garden had fallen to Annorae's grandmother, Enet. Now the garden was filled with tables and beer tents, decorations and flags. The Allsworth Estate was a gemstone, ready to host the nobility and politicians of Tystead for the grand Nalbinian New Year's festival.
King Lamais himself was coming, along with his three ministers, William White, Maxwell Drewyn and Rewill Symes.
Standing at the entrance to the estate, Grandmother Enet looked incredibly proud. Annorae went to keep her company while the rest of the family arrived, along with the guests. The sun was beginning to go down, and they had only half an hour until the festivities began officially.
"I hope I don't disappoint tonight." Grandmother Enet said, looking troubled. "The family's good name and reputation depend on this party going flawlessly."
"And I'm sure it will go wonderfully." Annorae said with a kindly smile. "You did a fantastic job, grandmother. The servants have done everything as you wished, and now look around us. The Estate has never looked so beautiful and welcoming. I'm sure everyone will have a good time."
The first guests to arrive were two of Annorae's cousins from her father's side, Mara Allsworth and her brother Bertom, from the town of Arkheath in the south. Next were lesser government officials from the King's court, followed eventually by the ministers, and finally, King Lamais.
At the gate of the estate, Annorae waited alongside her father, grandmother and servants to greet King John Lamais. He arrived in a carriage with his wife Audreyn, and their daughter Elys. He was a giant man, the ceremonial sword of the Paragon buckled at his waist, even for an event like this. A curly brown beard framed his strong-featured face, and his hands were often at his sides, making him an imposing figure.
"Welcome to the Allsworth Estate, my lord." Dougal said with a flowery bow. "May the new year be as prosperous as the last."

As the evening wore on, kegs of beer were brought out as minstrels played their merry tunes, singing of glories gone by.
One song was played especially for King John Lamais; the ballad of the Paragon. Long ago, before Nalbin was part of the Dominion, an Archon known as the Paragon came forward and challenged the King of Nalbin to a duel. To make the fight fair, the Paragon gave the King a runed sword, with the power to exploit the Paragon's weaknesses.
Though many accounts exist of the battle itself, the people of Nalbin were impressed by the Paragon, and agreed to join the Dominion because of the majesty and honour displayed in the duel.
Fireworks were launched into the sky, and eventually Annorae realised she recognized one of the performance artists - he was the man that the Wardens had sent to contact her. He winked at her, and faded into the crowds.
Towards midnight and the new year, a servant called Annorae into the mansion. There she found several disguised men and women - the Wardens. Elger was amongst them.
"Our investigations are concluded, madame. But we have one very big problem. One of our Wardens has not returned from his investigation."
Annorae grew cold. She knew that it had been a risk to trust the Wardens to do their job right - if they were caught, it would be a scandal. The Diplomat, sending spies into the homes of the ministers? It was unprecedented.
"Don't panic yet, milady." Elger said. "We don't know what happened. He might just be late to the rendezvous. It's too early to assume he was found out."
"Where was he sent?" Annorae asked.
"To the estate of the Minister Maxwell Drewyn of Theymoor."
Maxwell Drewyn was outside feasting, but he had made it clear he intended to return home soon. If he went home and discovered a captured Warden in his estate, then Annorae's career would be over.
She had to think fast.
