Starting 2480 at the age of 20
"Light me sal." The black salamander flicked his tail in distaste and scurried from his favourite pocket in my armour and ran across my face, tickling my cheek as he went. as he sat on the end of my pipe he turned to me,
<you know I hate this shit >
"well that's a shame isn't it, now light me." The salamander put its tiny foot, now glowing from the fire under his skin, into my bowl of tobacco. A small orange flame ignited and crept around the bowl, swallowing up the ripeness and moisture of the plant before becoming a healthy cloud of grey smoke. Sal glowed a deathly orange as I inhaled the first breath of the acrid smoke.
<oh by the arbiter! I think I breathed some in>
"yeah but you didn't cough this time, we'll have you puffing away in no time"
<you're going to die before you've trained my spark I swear> Sal ran up to my head and nestled in my hair
"well that was the agreement wasn't it?" I swatted at him
<you could just train it for a bit, you don't have to use magic in public>
I sighed and sucked on the pipe for a while "it's a matter of principal"
Sal sat on my hand and looked up at me
<I understand, but the burned man may ask you to demonstrate, then you'd be fucked>
"that's enough Sal, we're not getting into this" I stood up and put Sal into his pocket and looked out over the capital,
<Kutanda looks magical at night>
"You almost forget what we are here to do" I felt Sal nod in his pocket as I tapped the ash out of my pipe. It really is beautiful. The moonlight playing across the tiled roofs as the streets murmured with the late night dealings of the rouges and vagabonds. In the distance the faint glow of the crucible warmed the night sky. But tonight I forget about that and focus on the task at hand. I looked down at the streets three stories below, I put my cowl over my head and jumped.
Rule one: no one looks up
As I fell I linked myself with Sal, I felt my blood stiffen and our legs tightened. I felt myself turning over <we're going to fuck this up>
"Have faith in us Sal"
As we hit the ground Sal strengthened my bones and I rolled out of the fall, fucking nailed it.
<glad you're not dead>
"And I you" I was already running
Rule two: hold sacred the element of surprise, approach quickly and quietly.
My wrapped feet not making a sound on the cobbles. I saw my contract in an alley way, ash black hair, hands ablaze and dark red robes, glowing in the light of the fire licking at the hems. A young man backed away from the contract.
<we'd better be quick>
I lept at alley wall, grabbing onto a support beam and running along the hard stone. I pulled a knife from my sleeve and tightened my grip on the beam, coming to a stop. Sal's blood ran through my muscles and I sprung over the contract's head. We finished our rotation and I landed with our knife at his throat. Sal's blood rushing out of my body.
<Be quick> Sal shielded himself.
"There is silence in the Library" I whispered.
"And all the pages are ash, forgive me Sister" said the Burned Page calm and accepting.
"I forgive you" my blade sank into his jugular and through the trachea, it was a slow death but he deserved it.
<so messy>
"Do you want to stay and clean?"
Rule three: don't get caught
<funny doesn't suit you> Sal nodded towards the young man.
"What did he want you for?" The man quivered
"I am a poor man, I don't know shit"
<liar> Sal pointed out, always eagle eyes
<ten out of ten for observation> I shot back.
"Now there's no need to bullshit me, we're on the same side"
"Aye and why would I lie to a Librarian?" He had a point.
<tell him to leave, he stinks> Sal turned his nose up in a parody of the attendees. I snickered and the man gave me a dirty look.
"On your way" the man walked to the end of the alley and Sal's blood readied my legs to jump. The man turned and shouted,
"Stop..."
Sal looked worried and the man smirked
"...In the name of the arbiter"
